Telangana Professional Tax: Registration, Slabs, Payment and Returns
How Telangana Professional Tax works for employers, companies and professionals — registration and enrolment, salary slabs, monthly payment, returns and penalties.
Telangana levies Professional Tax under the Telangana Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, administered by the Commercial Taxes Department. This guide covers what employers and businesses need to do. Slabs, forms and due dates are revised from time to time, so check the department's current notifications.
Who Must Register
- Employers with employees working in Telangana, to deduct and pay PT on salaries.
- Companies, firms, LLPs and other businesses, for their own annual PT (enrolment).
- Professionals such as doctors, lawyers and chartered accountants practising in the state.
Salary Slabs
PT is deducted monthly based on the employee's salary. Under the slabs applying in recent years, monthly salaries up to ₹15,000 are exempt, salaries between ₹15,001 and ₹20,000 attract ₹150 a month, and salaries above ₹20,000 attract ₹200 a month. The annual total can't exceed ₹2,500.
Payment and Returns
Employers pay the PT deducted each month by the due date in the following month, generally by the 10th, and file returns through the Commercial Taxes portal. Businesses enrolled for their own PT pay the annual amount by the prescribed date.
Penalties
Late registration, late payment and failure to deduct can attract interest and penalties. Registering late doesn't remove liability for earlier periods.
Practical Tips
- Register before paying the first salaries.
- Apply PT only to employees working in Telangana.
- Reconcile PT deducted with PT paid each month.
- Keep enrolment for the business itself up to date.
