Internal Financial Controls for Telangana Companies: Common Gaps in Growing Businesses

The control gaps most often found in growing Telangana companies — plants outside Hyderabad, state compliance and founder-led approvals — and how to fix them.

Many Telangana companies grow quickly: a startup in Hyderabad that reaches ₹50 crore turnover in a few years, a manufacturer that adds a second plant in an industrial park, a pharma business that expands its distribution. At some point, the auditor must start reporting on internal financial controls — and controls that worked for a smaller business begin to show gaps. This guide covers the most common ones.

When IFC Reporting Starts

For a private company, the auditor's IFC report is required once turnover reaches ₹50 crore, or borrowings reach ₹25 crore. Companies crossing either line should prepare in the year before, since weaknesses found by the auditor appear in the audit report filed with ROC Hyderabad.

Common Gaps

Founder-led approvals

In many growing businesses, the founder approves everything — and nothing is documented. The control exists in practice, but there's no evidence for the auditor to test. The fix is a simple approval matrix and a record of approvals, whether in the system or by email.

Plants and branches outside Hyderabad

Where operations run from an industrial park or district location, local teams often handle purchases, stock and attendance with limited oversight. Controls should include periodic reviews from head office, stock counts, and system access that fits each role.

State compliance

Controls over Telangana State GST, Professional Tax and labour compliance are sometimes informal. A missed Professional Tax payment or GST mismatch is both a compliance issue and a control failure.

Vendor master and payments

Vendor bank details changed without verification, and the same person creating vendors and approving payments, remain among the most common gaps — and the most common fraud routes.

IT access

Shared logins, administrator access for everyone, and no review of who can do what in the accounting system undermine controls that otherwise look sound.

Financial close

No documented review of the monthly or year-end close means errors reach the financial statements.

A Practical Plan

  1. Confirm when IFC reporting will start.
  2. Document key processes, including at plants and branches.
  3. Introduce an approval matrix with evidence.
  4. Tighten vendor master and payment controls.
  5. Fix IT access and enable the audit trail.
  6. Test controls before the year end, and fix what doesn't work.
