Income Tax Notices for Telangana Taxpayers: Faceless Assessment and Hyderabad Appeals
How income-tax notices, assessments and appeals work for Telangana taxpayers: faceless procedures, and the Hyderabad ITAT bench and High Court for appeals.
Most income-tax assessments are now faceless, so a Telangana taxpayer's case may be handled by an assessment unit anywhere in India. But appeals beyond the first stage are heard locally, and some kinds of notices commonly arise from Telangana-specific transactions. This guide explains both.
Note: this article describes the rules under the Income-tax Act, 1961. The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026 (tax year 2026-27), with renumbered provisions and updated forms, so check the current position for later periods.
Faceless Assessment
For a taxpayer in Hyderabad or anywhere in Telangana, scrutiny notices arrive on the portal and by email, and responses are filed online. You won't normally meet an officer. The written response is what counts.
Notices Often Triggered in Telangana
- Property transactions: purchases and sales in the Hyderabad market are reported to the department, and differences between the price and stamp duty value draw questions.
- Cash deposits: high-value cash deposits, common in some trading and agriculture-linked businesses, show up in AIS.
- Agricultural income: large agricultural income claims may be asked to be substantiated with land records.
- Foreign assets: Hyderabad's large technology workforce holds foreign RSUs and accounts that must be reported.
Appeals
If you disagree with an assessment order:
- First appeal: to the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), filed online within the time allowed.
- Second appeal: to the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, which has a bench in Hyderabad hearing cases from the region.
- Further appeal: on substantial questions of law, to the High Court for the State of Telangana.
While an appeal is pending, a stay of the demand can be requested from the assessing officer, often on payment of a portion of it.
Local Help
The income-tax department has offices in Hyderabad, including facilities for taxpayer services and grievances, even though assessment itself is faceless.
