GST Registration and Amendments in Telangana: Threshold, State Code and Verification
GST registration specifics for Telangana businesses: the turnover threshold that applies, the state code, verification by officers, and amendments.
GST registration is a national process, but some details depend on the state. For a business in Telangana, those include the turnover threshold, the state code in the GSTIN, and which authority processes and verifies the application. This guide covers them.
The Threshold in Telangana
The GST law allows states to adopt a higher ₹40 lakh threshold for suppliers of goods, instead of ₹20 lakh. Telangana didn't adopt the higher limit, so businesses supplying goods from Telangana generally need to register once aggregate turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh. For services, the threshold is ₹20 lakh. Aggregate turnover counts all your supplies across India under the same PAN. Confirm the current position when you register, as thresholds can be revised.
Compulsory Registration
Regardless of turnover, businesses must register if they make inter-state supplies of goods, sell through e-commerce operators in many cases, or are liable to pay tax under reverse charge, among other categories.
The State Code
Every GSTIN begins with a two-digit state code. For Telangana, it's 36. A business with registrations in several states will have GSTINs starting with each state's code, under the same PAN.
Who Processes the Application
Applications are filed on the common GST portal. Once registered, taxpayers are allotted either to the Telangana Commercial Taxes Department or to the central GST authorities for administration. The allotted authority handles amendments that need approval, verification, and later, notices.
Physical Verification
Applications — particularly those without Aadhaar authentication, or flagged by risk parameters — may be subject to physical verification of the premises. Make sure:
- The premises matches the address and proof submitted.
- Signboards and some evidence of business activity are present.
- Someone is available if the officer visits.
Amendments in Telangana
Moving within Telangana, adding a godown in the state, or changing partners or directors are amendments filed in REG-14 within 15 days. Moving to another state needs a new registration there, and cancellation of the Telangana one if the business leaves entirely.
A Checklist
- Register once turnover crosses ₹20 lakh, or earlier if compulsory.
- Use accurate address proof for Telangana premises.
- Be ready for physical verification.
- Amend within 15 days of any change.
- Register separately for premises in other states.
