Advance Tax for Telangana Businesses and Professionals: Seasonal Income and Property Sales
Advance tax planning for Telangana taxpayers with seasonal businesses, agriculture-linked trade, contract income, and property sales in and around Hyderabad.
Advance tax rules are the same everywhere, but applying them depends on how income actually arrives. In Telangana, several common patterns make advance tax harder to estimate: seasonal agriculture-linked businesses, lumpy contract income, and frequent property transactions. This guide covers them.
Note: this article describes the rules under the Income-tax Act, 1961. The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026 (tax year 2026-27), with renumbered provisions and updated forms, so check the current position for later periods.
Seasonal and Agriculture-linked Businesses
Seed companies, rice mills, cotton traders and other businesses linked to Telangana's crop cycles often earn most of their profit in a few months after harvest. Paying 15% of the year's tax by June can be difficult to estimate. Practical approaches:
- Base estimates on past years' seasonal patterns, not a straight-line split.
- Review before each instalment and adjust.
- Accept some deferment interest where profit genuinely can't be predicted, rather than overpaying heavily.
Agricultural income itself is exempt, but trading and processing income isn't.
Contractors and Project Businesses
Construction and infrastructure contractors in and around Hyderabad often receive large payments on milestones, with TDS deducted by clients. Check whether TDS already covers the tax on each milestone; where it doesn't, pay advance tax in the instalment after the payment.
Property Sales
Hyderabad's property market means many individuals and businesses sell land or flats. Tax on capital gains from a sale can be paid in the instalments remaining after the sale without deferment interest. Remember:
- The Telangana stamp duty value may be treated as the sale price if it's higher.
- The buyer deducts TDS on the purchase, which counts towards your tax.
- A planned reinvestment can reduce the tax, but only if it actually happens.
Professionals
Doctors, architects, consultants and IT freelancers in Hyderabad often receive fees with TDS, but TDS rarely matches their final tax. Estimating before each instalment keeps interest low. Professionals under the presumptive scheme can pay it all by 15 March.
A Checklist for Telangana Taxpayers
- Estimate seasonal income realistically.
- Match TDS against expected tax on contract income.
- Pay tax on property gains in the next instalment.
- Review estimates before every due date.
